Madvillain - “MAdvillainy” Album Design

Madvillain is the duo of MC MFDOOM and producer Madlib. MF DOOM is a persona created by Daniel Dumile, based on the character of Doctor Doom from the Marvel Universe. DOOM also utilizes other monikers in his songs, creating a mysterious and powerful persona. Released in 2004, their debut album “Madvillainy” has since been regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time. I too highly regard this album, and wanted to give the packaging my own twist.

Inspiration Board

When looking for inspiration material, the album was listened to repeatedly. These listenings gave a sense that DOOM was this menacing presence, much like dictators of the past. Propaganda was referenced, to accurately depict DOOM in a position of power over the listener. Bold colors and dramatic angles were decided to deliver the same feeling. Comics were also referenced, due to their association with the MC’s moniker.

Process

Due to the significance of the album within the culture of hip-hop, I knew that redesigning it would need a new innovative design, much in the way the album was innovative at the time. I decided to create a new take on the classic gatefold design. In this design there are two flaps, which hold the records. When the flaps are opened, another image is revealed, along with the two artist’s names on the insides of the flaps.
