Sound Assertions

New Orleans is a city rich in history. One facet of this history is the genre of Jazz music. In Preservation Hall, three revolutionary artists will be celebrated for their contributions to the genre. In 2017, I was lucky enough to visit New Orleans and spend several days exploring and photographing the people and architecture. Through this promotional series, I hoped to fully incorporate the city's architectural history with its musical history.

In this series, I created a cohesive set of posters, that mirrored the experimental and expressive nature of Jazz music. In visual exploration, I found that gritty textures and strong use of color fit the topic of Jazz music rather well.

PROCESS

In order to create a successful series of posters, several phases of sketching were explored. These explorations included things such as, collaging imagery and utilizing scanners to warp and distort text.

Final Poster Series

For the final series, I decided to collage the featured artists over photos I took of New Orleans architecture. I painted a texture using acrylic paint, then sampled the painting to blend with the artist and architecture. The earlier exploration with scanning lead to the concept of elongating letter forms to resemble music scales and/or abstract instruments themselves when rotated vertically.

Finally, a promotional video was created to finish the promotional series. The video was created using a 3D workspace in Adobe After Effects. Brushstrokes were used to mask the layers and reveal them to the music.
